Believe him or not, Deputy Chief Robert Luna says that the Long Beach Police Department very rarely uses deadly force — an issue that arose again this month when officers shot knife-wielding 20-year-old David Jordan on Sept. 11.

For Long Beach, the heightened sensitivity toward officer-involved shootings hit new heights two winters ago when Douglas Zerby was shot and killed by officers in Belmont Shore — afterwards it was found out he only was holding a hose nozzle.
